About Brown Shorthair GoatsAbout Brown Shorthair Goats

Since the twilight of the 19th century, the Brown Shorthair Goats have undergone a process of refinement and enhancement that has elevated them to a distinguished status. Originating from a native breed characterized by an array of hues, ranging from light-brown to ivory, these goats embarked on a journey of improvement through strategic crossbreeding with the esteemed German brown (Erzgebirgziege) bucks.

In a seminal moment of recognition, the Brown Shorthair Goats were officially acknowledged as an autonomous breed in the years 1954-55, marking a significant milestone in their evolutionary trajectory. Nestled amidst the rugged landscapes of the northern and western mountain regions of the Czech Republic, these goats embody a rich legacy shaped by centuries of selective breeding and environmental adaptation.

Distinguished by their sleek and glossy short hair, their coat adorns shades ranging from cinnamon to rich ferruginous or dark brown, imbuing them with a distinctive allure. Eelstripes cascade gracefully from cantle to tailtip, while their belly, shank, and hooves bear the deep hue of ebony. With upright ears framing their visage, the majority of these goats, approximately 75-80%, boast the noble trait of hornlessness, adding to their refined aesthetic.

In terms of stature, the Brown Shorthair Goats exude an air of robustness and vitality. Adult females typically tip the scales at a weight of 120-140 pounds, standing proud with a withers height of 70-75 cm and a heart girth ranging from 80-102 cm. Their male counterparts, exhibiting a formidable presence, command a weight range of 140-190 pounds, with a withers height of 75-85 cm and a heart girth spanning 90-110 cm.

Remarkably early to mature, these goats embark on their reproductive journey with a precocious spirit, often bearing their first offspring at a tender age of 12-15 months. This testament to their vigor and fertility underscores their resilience and adaptability, solidifying their position as stalwarts of agricultural heritage and guardians of a timeless legacy.
