About Puttalam Buruw DonkeysAbout Puttalam Buruw Donkeys

The Puttalam Buruwa is a breed of domestic donkey that is native to the Puttalam District in Sri Lanka. This breed is known for its hardiness and versatility, as it is used for a variety of purposes, including transportation, plowing, and carrying heavy loads.

Puttalam Buruwa donkeys are medium-sized animals, with an average height of about 12 hands at the shoulder. They have a sturdy build and a thick, dense coat that helps them withstand the hot and humid conditions of the region. They are also known for their strong legs, which enable them to navigate steep terrain and carry heavy loads.

Despite the breed's practical uses, Puttalam Buruwa donkeys are also valued for their gentle and affectionate temperament. They are often kept as companion animals, and are well-loved by their owners for their loyalty and affection.

Like many donkey breeds, the Puttalam Buruwa has faced declining populations in recent years. This is due in part to the declining use of donkeys for work, as well as the widespread use of motorized vehicles. However, efforts are underway to preserve the breed and promote its use in traditional farming and transportation.
