The Orobica, also known as Valgerola Goat, is a medium-sized breed native to the Val Gerola region in the province of Sondrio, nestled within the Bergamo Alps of northern Italy.
Despite being documented only at the turn of the twentieth century, the exact origins of the Orobica Goat remain shrouded in mystery. Nevertheless, they have become recognized as one of the eight autochthonous Italian goat breeds, with their lineage meticulously recorded in the genealogical herdbook maintained by the Associazione Nazionale della Pastorizia, the Italian national association of sheep-breeders.
As of the end of 2013, the registered population of Orobica Goats numbered a modest 274, highlighting the breed's status as a niche and relatively rare breed within Italy's rich tapestry of domesticated animals.
