About Hexi Cashmere GoatsAbout Hexi Cashmere Goats

The Hexi Cashmere goat, primarily found in China, holds a prestigious position in the realm of cashmere fiber production. Revered for its luxurious fleece, this breed typically exhibits a pristine white coat, although variations in color such as black, brown, or pied are also observed.

The legacy of cashmere production traces back to the ancient region of Kashmir, nestled amidst the rugged terrain of India and Pakistan. Despite its origins, the intricate process of transforming cashmere fiber flourished in Tibet before journeying to the artisanal workshops of Kashmir in the 15th century. During this era, the meticulous craftsmanship of over 50,000 individuals was devoted to the meticulous processing of cashmere.

In the 19th century, the evolution of cashmere manufacturing reached a pivotal juncture with the pioneering efforts of Scottish manufacturer Joseph Dawson. His groundbreaking mechanical method revolutionized the extraction of fine down fibers from the coarser outer hairs of the goat's fleece, heralding the dawn of modern cashmere knitwear. Subsequently, the locus of cashmere craftsmanship transitioned to Scotland, only to return to its ancestral home in China in recent times.

Today, China stands as the epicenter of high-quality cashmere knitwear, leveraging cutting-edge technology and stringent quality control measures imported from Japan. Yet, despite advancements in mechanization, the hallmark of superior cashmere garments lies in the artisanal touch of handcrafted production.

The meticulous process begins with hand-combing each goat during the spring shedding season, followed by washing, dehairing, dyeing, and mechanical spinning of the fleece. Skilled artisans meticulously operate knitting frames by hand, meticulously monitoring critical factors like yarn tension and garment shape to ensure impeccable quality.

Each finished garment undergoes rigorous individual inspection to uphold standards of perfection. It is this unparalleled dedication to handcrafted excellence that distinguishes Chinese-made cashmere garments, as labor-intensive attention to detail elevates the final product to unparalleled levels of craftsmanship.

The finest cashmere originates from the high desert plateaus surrounding the Gobi Desert, where the yarn is so exquisitely fine that it takes an astonishing four miles of it to craft a single sweater, epitomizing the unrivaled luxury and quality synonymous with Hexi Cashmere.
