The Shanbei donkey, also known as the Northern Shaanxi donkey, is a breed of domestic donkey native to the Shanbei region of northern China. They are a medium to large-sized breed, with a sturdy build and strong legs. Shanbei donkeys are primarily used for plowing fields, carrying heavy loads, and as a source of milk and meat. They have a distinctive appearance, with a long, sloping back, short legs, and large, floppy ears. Their coats come in a variety of colors, including gray, black, brown, and white. They are known for their calm and docile temperament, making them easy to handle and train.

In terms of physical characteristics, Shanbei donkeys have a broad forehead and a strong neck, with well-defined withers and a deep, broad chest. Their hindquarters are muscular, with a well-rounded croup and a straight, strong back. Their legs are short and sturdy, with strong hooves that are well-suited to rough terrain.

The Shanbei donkey is an important breed in China, where they are considered a symbol of the rural countryside and are widely used in traditional folk festivals and celebrations. Despite the increasing use of modern machinery and transportation in recent years, the Shanbei donkey continues to play a critical role in the daily lives of many rural communities in northern China.
