About Italian Shepherd DogsAbout Italian Shepherd Dogs

The Italian Shepherd, also known as the Cane da Pastore Italiano, is a relatively new breed with a mysterious past. In 1975, breeder Piero Accettella noticed black-coated dogs with wolf-like traits in various regions of Italy. He believed these dogs held the potential for a reliable livestock guardian, and after careful selection and introduction of Molosser blood, the modern Italian Shepherd was born.

This medium-large dog is well-proportioned and built for endurance, constantly patrolling its territory. As adults, they develop a rugged constitution and have a lifespan of around 17 years.

While serious and alert, the Italian Shepherd isn't prone to aggression. They are excellent guards, cautious of strangers on their property but calm and indifferent outside their domain. This strong temperament requires a firm and experienced owner who can provide consistent training and leadership. However, they are highly adaptable and love their owners unconditionally.

If you're looking for a loyal and dedicated guardian dog for your rural property, the Italian Shepherd might be a good fit. Remember, their strong temperament requires an experienced owner who can understand and fulfill their needs.
