About American Blackbelly SheepAbout American Blackbelly Sheep

American Blackbelly (also known as Corsican) sheep are arncomposite breed resulting from the crossing of Barbados Blackbelly with Mouflonrnand Rambouillet breeds. As the name implies, the underbelly of the AmericanrnBlackbelly is black, as is the inside of the legs, the back part of the thighs, rnand the hair inside the ears. Two black facial barbs extend down the muzzlernmedial to the eye, giving the breed an exotic appearance.

Through selective breeding, thernAmerican Blackbelly has retained the coloration of its Barbados Blackbellyrnparent stock, but can be easily distinguished by the presence of horns on thernrams. It is harder to identify which breed a ewe represents because AmericanrnBlackbelly females may be polled, scurred, or horned, with the majority beingrnpolled. Because this sheep is popular with the trophy hunting markets,rn"trophy racks" are heavily selected for in American Blackbellyrnbreeding stock.

American Blackbelly are hairrnsheep, although in some areas of the U.S., American Blackbelly may develop arnwinter undercoat of fine wool fiber that is shed in the spring. AmericanrnBlackbellies are known for their vitality, thrift, easy lambing, and leanrncarcass.
