About Chester White PigsAbout Chester White Pigs

Chester White pigs originatedrnin Chester County, Pennsylvania. The Chester White was first developed around 1816,rnusing strains of large, white pigs common to the Northeast U.S. and a whiternboar imported from Bedfordshire. Alsornsome believe that Chinese pigs might have been added as well.

rnrnBy 1884rna breed association was officially formed but competing organizations, rnsometimes for individual strains, continued to appear into the early 20thrncentury. Finally in 1930 all breed organizations were consolidated under thernChester White Swine Record Association.

rnrnTodayrnthe Chester White is a versatile breed suited to bothintensiveand extensive husbandry. Though not asrnpopular as the Duroc, Yorkshire, rnor Hampshire, the Chester White is actively used inrncommercial crossbreeding operations for pork. The Chester White is the mostrndurable of the white breeds; it can gain as much as 1.36 pounds (0.62 kg)rna day and gain 1 pound (0.45 kg) for every 3 pounds (1.4 kg) of grainrnit is fed. However since they are white they get sunburns easily and they need shadernin the summer.
