About Basque PigsAbout Basque Pigs

Basquernpigs (or Pie noir du Pays basque) are from Basque Country, France. Theyrnare piebald, black and pink.

What isrntoday called the Basque pig is one of several historical breeds or breed typesrnkept by Basque peoples, and it was consolidated under the name only in thern1920s. Though they were relatively common in the early 20th century, Basquernpigs had nearly disappeared by 1981, with fewer than 100 breeding sows left.

Today, rnthe breed is preserved by small farmers in France and Spain who are dedicatedrnto traditional Basque foods.rnBasque pigs grow more slowly and develop more fat than modern breeds likernthe Large White, making them less suited to intensive commercial meatrnproduction, but ideal for the creation of cured pork products such as Bayonnernham. Basque sows have smallish litters of about nine young, but have a strongrnmaternal instinct and are good mothers.
