Boer Goat were developed in SouthrnAfrica as a meat goat. Their name is derived from the Afrikaansword "boer", meaning farmer.

rnrnThey were probably bred fromrnthe indigenous goats of the Namaqua Bushmen and the Fooku tribes, and perhaps some Indian andrnEuropean bloodlines. They were selected for meatrnproduction; due to selective breeding, the Boer goat evolved into has a fast-growingrngoat with excellent carcass qualities, making it one of the most popular breedsrnof meat goat in the world.

rnrnBoer goats have a highrnresistance to disease and adapt well to hot, dry semi deserts. In the UnitedrnStates they are mainly found in west-central Texas. The original US breedingrnstock came from herds located in New Zealand. Only later were they importedrndirectly from South Africa.

rnrnBoer goats commonly have whiternbodies and brown heads. Some Boer goats can be completely brown or white. Like Nubianrngoats, they have long, pendulous ears. They are noted for being docile,rnfast-growing, and having high fertility rates. Does are reported to havernsuperior mothering skills as compared to other goats. Mature Boer bucks weighrn110–135 kg (240-300 lb), and mature does weigh 90–100 kg (200-220 lb).
