About Cravin Scenthound DogsAbout Cravin Scenthound Dogs

CravinrnScenthounds originated from Piedmont and are a variety of the small Italianrnhare dog. They probably are the result of crossbreeding of Italian scenthounds, rnamong which the “Ciaplin”, a very expert small tawny short-haired scenthoundrnwith white paws and tail end. In the past these dogs were reared by farmrnhunters on the Piedmont hills; together with golden or white-orange rough-rnhaired scenthounds from Savoy, probably the Vandean “briquet”, largely presentrnin the Piedmont Alps.

rnrnOver time, andrnwith many crossbreeding, the Cravin Scenthounds have greatly changed and howrnthey are used.

rnrnCravin Scenthoundsrnare medium small sized dogs of arnrobust aspect emphasized by a thick coat, but a slender built with good musclesrnand strong bones. They have a shy and reserved temperament. They are dynamic, rnenthusiastic and tireless.

rnrnTheir prefered walk isrna trot, while searching, which is light, energetic, easy, alternating with somernshort galloping. They follow sure animal traces scrupulously, they do not wasterntime on unsure ones; they choose an initiative, quite rapid, and conclusivernaction. They declare what they find with vibrant movements of the tail whichrnhits the hips, then through a high sharp expressive voice, broken by some shortrnor long stops when various low moans are heard. They work alone or even betterrnin couples; when in a small group, not bigger than four, they keep their strongrnpersonality, which leads them to an independent sort of work, but they canrnalways be present when needed.
