About Reggiana CattleAbout Reggiana Cattle

During the Barbaric Invasions around the year 568 followingrnthe new people the herds with a particular red coat; they had robbed thisrnanimal in the big plains of southern Russia and Pannonia.

rnrnRustic cows, in that age with triple aptitude and quite goodrnmilk producers: they soon become a point of reference for the monks that in therntwelfth century started to produce the ancestor of our today’s ParmigianornReggiano Cheese. There were many breeds in Northern and Central Italy as arnmatter of fact the Italian Renaissance artistic tradition inserts constantlyrnthe red ox in the Nativity’spictures.rnThis breed was a protagonist (and still is today for its quality) in the  agriculture and livestock of the Reggiano andrnParma context because it was the most breed since the second half of therntwentieth century when it reached on 1954 rnthe number of 136,695 head of cattle. But the Italian’s post warrnpolitics in order to reach easier selection results, become to crossbreed theserncows with cosmopolitan breeds for their replacement. On 1980 there were lessrnthan one thousand of this particular head of cattle.

rnrnThe good quality of milk and the exploitation strategiesrnalso supported by the Ministry of Agriculture ad Forest Politics and by thernEmilia Romagna region had determined a constant population increase andrncurrently the head of cattle has reached 2,300 units present in 179 farms.

rnrnSince 1985 the Registry Office of autochthonous cattlernbreeds and ethnic groups of limited diffusion has been founded, in order tornprotect those Italian cattle breeds at risk of extinction and to safeguard thisrngenetic heritage. Among them there are the following breeds: Agerolese, BiancarnVal Padana (Modenese), Burlina, Cabannina, Calvana, Cinisara, Garfagnina,rnModicana, Mucca Pisana, Pezzata Rossa d’Oropa, Pinzgau, Pontremolese,rnPustertaler, Reggiana, Sarda, Sardo-Modicana, Varzese.

rnrnThe breed is characterized by the red wheat color coat (therncolor of the wheat’s with dark or pale changings, more or less toned down inrnthe inside parts and in the lower limbs,at the eyes edges. The subjects of this breed have a good size, longrntrunk, a solid plant skeleton, and quite long head always very distinct.
